LATIMER, MS (WLOX) -

The man who found a body inside a freezer Monday morning in Latimer says the victim was a tenant he hadn’t seen in three weeks. Homeowner Michael Woods made the grisly discovery after walking in the house and smelling a “horrible smell.”

Woods told WLOX News Now as soon as he opened the freezer and saw he body, he got out of the house and called authorities. 

Jackson County Sheriff Mike Ezell said the freezer where the man’s body was discovered had been off for an extended period of time. The home is near the intersection of Jean St. and Althea St. in the Virginia City area of Latimer.

Officials said the man’s car is missing, and investigators are looking for a person of interest. Detectives are working to see if a neighbor’s surveillance system can provide any insight into what happened

Jackson County Coroner Vicki Broadus said an autopsy has been scheduled for Tuesday.
